Game Audio Demo

A small demo game I made with the main purpose of implementing sound effects and music. The game incorporates basic movement, platforming and interaction with switches and physics objects and was made using the Unity engine. The core of this demo was creating a basic dynamic music system to serve as backdrop to the puzzle platformer gameplay.

A demo of the sounds and music transitions ingame

I made all of the sound effects from various recordings of household objects and composed a short ambient music cue for the sound effects to work against. There are different sounds for jumping, interacting with switches, collecting coins and velocity sensitive collisions, among others.

The music was made using an ambient base layer that serves as the main loop of the cue and is constantly playing. For each of the four levels, there is an additional layer that expands upon the base layer. These expansion loops follow the same structure as the main loop but each introduces different sounds into the mix. All of the expansion loops introduce more synths and percussive sounds.

Overview of the music used in the demo (white elements are part of the main loop and are muted for the expansion loops)

For level 1, the expansion layer introduces celesta and a vocal synth. Levels 2 and 3 introduce guitar plucks and level 3 additionally introcudes a female choir. Level 4 features a predominantly male choir and the celesta. When a level is started, the appropriate layer is gradually added over the ambient base layer and taken out again when the player returns to the menu.

Full suite of music from the demo

I have also created a full suite of the music used in the demo. The suite encompasses the main loop, as well as the expansion loops for Level 1, 4, 2 and 3 stitched together to create a cohesive music cue. Each of the segments comprises of roughly 48 seconds of music, but in the game, a transition between the segments is possible at any point during playback without restarting the loop.
